Lake Hubert, Minnesota

NEWS RELEASE!

Starry Stonewort confirmed in Middle Cullen Lake in Crow Wing County

Starry Stonewort is an aquatic invasive species from Western Europe and Asia that was first found in Minnesota in 2015. It creates thick matts of vegetation and is destructive to water recreational activities and native habitat. Until now, it has been considered rare in Minnesota and has not been in our area. It can be controlled but it cannot be eradicated. This creates new urgency about cleaning any watercraft properly before bringing it into our lake. We plan to research what other steps can be taken to monitor Lake Hubert for it, and to educate the public about the risks of AIS.

Seeking LHCA Board Members!

The LHCA Board is always looking for volunteers who are interested in helping to preserve our lake for future generations. Joining the board is also a great way to meet people and to stay abreast of what is going on in our community. Please consider this great volunteer opportunity!

What’s happening at the lake?

We have 2 nesting loon pairs on the lake this spring!

Our 2 established nests are inhabited again with incubating parents. We have 2 new platforms out for a total of four, and we’re hoping to see at least one of them with a new pair.

Second ice-out April 3, 2024!

Our first ice-out was on March 15, and then it got cold, snowed, and the lake got a thin layer of ice in late March, so one for the records…2 ice-outs!

Record ice-out, 3/15/24!

The ice was gone.

Spring came early!

As of mid-February, it seemed like spring. We had virtually no snow and had regular high temps above freezing. We had some rain, but not enough, and no snow to speak of.

It was Winter…sort of!

We’ve had mostly warmer than usual temps and less than usual precipitation. We had about 4 inches of snow on the ground as of mid-January, 2024.

Thanks to the Wieland Family for hosting another fabulous Summer Social at their lovely home! And thanks to Julie Hall for the photos.
