Ice Out Historical Dates

The day the ice “goes out” (completely disappears from the lake) is a momentous one for those who live by the lake in the winter. Ice-out signals that winter is over and spring really is coming. Ice-out day is always the day when the Loons return and the most hardy Crappie fishermen, and people who have bad cases of cabin fever, can be seen out on the water for the first time. It is a day for rejoicing.

- 75 degrees - there was ice in sunset bay in the morning - gone by late afternoon

5-6-2022 - second latest on record!

5-3-2023 - We had record snowfall in Minnesota, including the Brainerd Lakes area, and our lake levels are finally healthy, after 2+ years of drought.

3-15-2024 - EARLIEST, then AGAIN on 4-3/2024!

- We had a very dry winter, with no significant snow accumulation and above freezing temperatures beginning in early February. Then, the ice all melted…but, one for the records, the lake refroze in late March after a 12-inch snowfall, and our second ice-out occurred in early April!
